About Spirco Manufacturing

In 1970, Gary Sims founded Sims Steel Buildings in a quaint farm town in Arkansas. His operations mainly catered to the local farmers, functioning as a metal building contractor. Not long after, he expanded his services to include the fabrication of building frames and started procuring components from other manufacturers.

Growth & Partnership

In the summer of 1985, Gary and his son Barry decided to form a partnership. After reviewing their prospects across the mid-south, they settled on Memphis as the optimal location for their new company. Following the relocation, Metal Building Products, Inc. (MBPI) initiated its operations from a 12,000-square-foot facility in Memphis in 1986.

Expansion & Innovation

MBPI picked up the mantle from Sims Steel, continuing to provide metal buildings along with general contracting services within and around the Memphis area. The company experienced substantial growth and began adding equipment to roll form panels and purlins. By the end of the 1980s, MBPI was proudly manufacturing a complete metal building system.

A New Era

Barry took the reins by purchasing the company from Gary in 1995. By 1997, the growth of the manufacturing portion of the business made it necessary to separate the two operations to better serve their customers and allow growth.

It was then that Spirco Manufacturing was born, derived from combining the words “spirit” and “company.” In the year 2000, the two divisions were further segregated as MBPI transferred to an alternate site. Today, Spirco Manufacturing and MBPI, though on the same property, function independently as distinct divisions.
